A troop of frolicking fairies identified
as the Kaleidoscope gang are alleged
in their frolicking ways to have taken
control of the Fairy Tales Newsletter. Inspired
by colour they have added their kaleidoscope
touch.
The
band is comprised of Crimson, known
for her vibrant and powerful imagination,
Indigo, known for her calming and tranquil
moods, Jade, renowned for her envious
and dominant spirit, Violet, famous
for her shy and bashful ways and Honey,
known for her mellow and thoughtful
attitude.
All
are known to possess an abundance of
mischief and playfulness. People
who invite them into their homes should
be prepared to add a lot of adventure
and spice to their lives.
When
last seen they were giggling and romping
off to spread their kaleidoscope of
colour to other realms that need to
be inspired by their intensity.
When
interviewed, Teresa and Terry of Fables,
Fantasy & Fairy Tales were grateful
for their inspiration of colour and
stated that if captured, no charges
will be laid. The Kaleidoscope gang
wanted to ensure they were given credit
for this transformation so they left
behind a photo of themselves performing
their antics. This, in turn, inspired
Teresa and Terry to create a likeness
of all five fairies. They present them
to you and wonder how they will inspire
your life! |

Finding
Felix Continued
By Dr. Win Mellor-Hay
Eryn has just discovered her talents as a
Finder Fairy Can she help find the missing
Felix in our continuing Fairy Adventure?
The
Security elders’ faces turned
a pale shade of grey. No one had ever gone
into Pixie territory. It was unknown how dangerous
Pixies could be. But fairies had lived in Fairyland
for centuries, peacefully, right next to what
they understood was probably Pixie land. No
Pixie had ever ventured across to Fairyland
and likewise, fairies left Pixies alone. “Across
the Flatlands to the Fortune Mountains? Is
that where the boy is?” the most senior
Security Elder asked the Wise Ones. “No,
not to the mountains,” a solemn Wise
fairy said with a shake of the head. Everyone
in the Navreets’ living room looked askance.
Then where? They were wondering. “We
don’t have the means to cross Meditation
Sea—“ another Security fairy started.
It was true. Fairies were not sailors. Neither
were they swimmers for that matter. Meditation
Sea stretched as far as the eye could see. No
fairy could be expected to fly that distance
with no breaks for rest, food and water. But
the same Wise One shook his or her head again. “The
other side of the Mystics?” Mr. Navreet
asked, softly, hoping he wasn’t right.
There was a well-worn mountain pass through
the Mystics that led to the Travel Centre.
That’s where the Sky portal was housed;
fairies used it to fly to Earth and other planets.
But beyond that was a sere, lifeless desert
that covered thousands of square miles. Sometimes
very old fairies went out there to transform. (Fairies
don’t die, by the way. They transform
into hedgehogs and live for a hundred more
years on Earth. After that, they transform
again into dragonflies and wing their way back
to Fairyland to wait their turn to become fairies
again.) But the Wise One’s head
shook, no. Then the Senior Security Elder whispered
under his breath: “Silent Meadow.” Everyone
in the room gasped. The Wise One nodded yes
this time. Another Wise One explained that
beyond Silent Meadow, in Pixie territory, there
apparently existed a forest of extremely magical
vegetation. To protect itself from over-harvesting,
this vegetation had developed defensive properties. In
other words, the plants and trees in this forest
could hurt you!
Eryn
broke out in a cold sweat. That’s
why Felix looked so distressed in her vision!
The actual vegetation surrounding him had harmed
him!
The
Security Guild fairies were taking notes
while the Wise Ones imparted details about
the harmful plant life. They described razor-flap
trees, whose leaves would slice your skin.
They talked about the strong tangle-vine,
which could wrap around your limbs and hold
you indefinitely. There were squirt-berry
bushes, the fruit of which would dramatically
enhance your magical powers temporarily.
But if you ate too many, you’d have
a stomach ache for weeks afterward. And the
list went on. The Wise Ones said there were
many plants in the Pixie forest that were
not even listed in the Fairyland library’s
resources. Who knew what dangers lurked in
the Pixie forest?
The
security elders went off to assemble appropriate
gear for the rescue mission. Eryn sat on
the Navreets’ living
room floor and asked the Wise Ones: “How
would Felix have gotten through Silent Meadow?
His wings haven’t
opened yet.” The Wise Ones looked
to each other then back to Eryn, raising their
shoulders and turning their palms up. They
had no idea.
Eryn went back home with her parents. Silent
Meadow derived its name from the more than
500 families of snakes who called it home.
The snakes loved to sit and sun themselves
in the heat of the day, waiting for their prey
to come wandering by. They especially loved
field mice, but had also been known to feast
on other small creatures. They behaved
like rattlesnakes except for the fact that
they had no rattle, hence their name: Silent
Snakes. Fairies had been keeping their
youngsters and small animals away from Silent
Meadow for eons. The sting of the Silent Snake
would put you unconscious and when you awoke,
hours later, if you awoke, you’d find
most of your flesh eaten away. The thought
of Silent Meadow gave Eryn shivers. The rescue
team would have to fly over Silent Meadow and
carry Felix back with them.
Eryn
watched through her bedroom window for the
security fairies coming back with their rescue
team. The Navreets’ house
was being used as the command centre. When
she saw them marching down the street toward
the Navreets decked out in their protective
suits, she ran down the stairs and out her
front door to join them. Her dad saw her fly
by so he followed her out into the street.
He was afraid she was going to try to go with
them.
Sure
enough Eryn was running beside the Senior
Security Elder, talking rapidly, and struggling
to keep up with the group. Eryn’s
dad saw the Senior Elder shake his head curtly
and turn away. But his heart sank as he watched
his persistent daughter run after the team
again, tug on the Senior Elder’s sleeve,
catch up to him and start talking again. But
he wouldn’t look at her, nor would he
slow down, so she ran ahead in front of the
group and then turned around in the middle
of the road. She stood, with her arms folded,
right in his path. He was forced to stop to
avoid walking right over top of her. Eryn’s
dad watched the Senior Elder stand perfectly
still and listen to what his daughter told
him. After she stopped talking, he continued
to stand and look at her intently. After a
few minutes he glanced over to her dad, who
was standing in the street, and to the front
door over her house, where her mother was standing
watching the exchange. Finally the Senior Elder
made up his mind. Eryn’s dad saw him
nod once to Eryn and then commence walking
again. Eryn’s mother cried out and this
time it was Eryn’s dad turn to run and
catch up with the rescue team. He caught up
with them on the Navreets’ front lawn. “It’s
too dangerous,” he cried. “You
can’t let my little girl go with you!
A Pixie forest is no place for a young girl!” The
Senior Elder eyed him steadily. Eryn was already
putting on a protective suit, which was obviously
much too big for her. Mr. & Mrs.
Navreet were standing on their porch watching
and listening. “She’s a
Finder Fairy, sir,” the Senior Elder
said. And he deemed that was enough of
an answer, because he turned away from Eryn’s
dad as if the subject was closed.
Mrs.
Navreet came running down from the porch
to Eryn’s
dad. “She’s
got the vision! She is the only one who
can find my boy!” Mrs. Navreet
cried when she saw the dismay on Eryn’s
father’s face. “She will
be safe; she will be protected,” Mrs.
Navreet took hold of Eryn’s dad’s
hands and spoke reassuringly right into his
face. Eryn’s mother had come across
the yard and was speaking to Eryn. “Honey,
you don’t have to do this,” her
mother said. “Yes I do, Mom. Trust me.
This is the right thing to do.” Eryn
said briskly and continued getting dressed
in the protective outerwear from the security
guild. “You’re only 16, honey.
Pixie territory is very dangerous. These security
fairies are skilled, trained,… they’re
used to danger; they know how to handle—“ “Mom,” Eryn
cut her off quietly, but sternly. “I’ve
finally found my calling, okay? Just let me
do my job.” Eryn’s mother
put her hand up to her lips as if to stop herself
from saying anything more. She stepped back
a few paces, hardly recognizing the fairy before
her. Eryn seemed to have matured overnight.
There she was: a determined, serious, self-possessed
young woman. Her mother caught an unexpected
sob in her throat, and then felt her husband
come up behind her and wrap his arms around
her waist. They held on to each other and watched
their daughter leave with the rescue team. She
was jogging labouriously in the oversized white
safety suit to keep pace with the security
fairies.

This
is another fine mess I’ve gotten into! What
would our world be without curiosity? Whether
it is that of our world’s great inventors
or of a singular fairy wondering what It’s
like to be on the inside of a glass, curiosity
leads us to knew places and ideas. Catya
the Curious has been caught in a moment in
time, looking out through the glass perhaps
startled by a noise and her fear of discovery. She
is dressed in fine dusty blue silk with fairy
dust highlights. Her soft blue iridescent
wings are matched by the opalescent glass
beads in the bottom of her glass. The
glass itself may vary depending upon availability. Catya
the Curious reminds us of all the questions
we have and the answers we seek.

Hope

From
the darkness of dismay, the curtains
part and Hope emerges planting
seeds of promise and plenty. In
her youthful uplifted face is reflected
all the possibilities of this world. Hope
is dressed in soft yellow silk petals
reminiscent of a daffodil. She
wears pretty green leggings that
match her bodice. More soft yellow
petals are gathered around her neck
and a tiny flower bud hat tops her
curly brown locks. Like a daffodil
in Spring, Hope is there to reward
us for trials endured and offers
us the promise of new beginnings. She
holds a yellow ribbon to lead us
to new joy. In the gentleness
of a child and a Fairy there is always
Hope.
