Long
ago in a time before time, the great Fairy Deva Ostara saw an unfortunate
bird whose wings had been burnt by fire. As she was a compassionate Fairy
Queen she changed the poor bird into a bunny. But alas Ostara had more
heart than magical skill and the transformation was incomplete. The bunny
could still lay eggs!
Forever grateful
for being saved from what was sure to be a tragic fate, this egg-laying
bunny went about saving these eggs and once a year would set out and deliver
them to the people of the Human Realm.
The fairies
in Ostara’s clan admired the bunny’s enterprise and recognized that the
eggs were symbols of fertility, beauty and hope to the Human Realm so
they decided to help the bunny. Some fairies dyed the eggs by boiling
them with red cabbage or blueberries while others spent hours ornately
decorating them with jewels and their very own fairy dust. Since fairies
are known for their sweet tooth, some set about creating eggs from the
richest chocolate and the sweetest hand spun candy.
As
the spring delivery day approached, the Easter Bunny as she had now become
known, would gather all the eggs for delivery to the human homes and place
them in the waiting baskets and nests that the children had now begun
to make. The fairies joined in the fun by concealing some of the bunny’s
eggs in their favorite hiding places, secret places in the garden and
in shady nooks in the woods, rocks and flowers. The children were then
encouraged to seek out these eggs. This is the only time of the year that
we humans are welcomed as intruders into the Fairy Realm.
The magic
of the children’s smiles and laughter brings great joy to the fairy folk.
During the Easter egg hunt the children and their parents should be alert
as the fairy folk are nearby and you may actually get a quick glimpse
of a fairy and a bunny.

Hathor’s
Unicorn
“A Snippet” For
about a year now Hathor’s meditations had been showing her a journey.
At first it was very jumbled and confusing: fragments of landscapes, snippets
of images that could have been anywhere. Nothing was consecutive; none
of it made sense. Then, little by little, over time, the images had become
clearer. Hathor had developed her powers of concentration, using her magic
unconsciously, to strengthen her psychic abilities. She was convinced
the scenes she saw in her meditations held a message for her. And last
night she had seen the final scene in the journey. She was right. Her
meditations were taking her to a place very close to her heart: the place
where the unicorns lived.
Hathor covered
the distance to the stand of trees in minutes. She tore her way through
the little grove, racing toward the light that came through from the far
side where the path opened out into a small meadow. When Hathor burst
through the last of the trees, she saw them. There they were. Smaller
than she’d imagined, pure white, with shiny, silky manes and delicate
features. They startled a little bit when she appeared, their soft blue
eyes darting around suspiciously. But they quickly settled back to grazing.
Astragulus
canadensis, also known as Canadian milk vetch, grew in abundance all around
the tiny herd. The creamy yellow flowers of the plant that looked a lot
like wild lupin, Hathor knew, were only around for a month or two every
summer. She wondered where the unicorns went and what they ate in the
winter. Standing in the astragulus meadow, looking at the unicorns, she
knew she had no time to waste.

A
Fairy Named Fire
Less
than perfect is what they should say
She is not a steady fire
But a flame in the wind of reality that will sway
You cannot contain her: she must go free
No limits put can keep; she just goes on optimistic ferocity
Her flame may falter and flicker, but it will never go out
Still the onlookers whisper plagued by doubt
After all of this time you think people would have learned
Don’t mess with the fire unless you’re willing to get burned.
