Finding
Felix Part 3 The Fairy Eryn discovers her calling as she sets out to help her fairy friend Felix. When the little boy she had been babysitting off and on all summer disappeared, Eryn was distressed, but she was also grateful for a break in the monotony of the summer. Eryn found Felix actually fun to look after. They would walk for hours in the North Forest, Felix nattering away to Eryn as he collected samples for his lab. One day Felix had told her, “Eryn, I like you. You let me be me.” His rare smile, when he granted one, was brilliant. Eryn remembered smiling back at the little boy.
“We’ll find him,” she said softly, giving Mrs. Navreet’s hands a squeeze, and then went to her own house, next door. Eryn couldn’t sleep at all that night, thinking about little Felix. She was still sitting up in bed, with her elbows on her window sill, when she saw the sun come up. She was marveling over the beauty of the pink sky when she found herself in the midst of a vision. When she came out of it she ran straight to her parents’ bedroom. She had seen Felix! Eryn’s astonished parents shook themselves awake and sent their oldest son immediately to the Wise Ones. They didn’t want to say anything to the Navreets yet, just in case Eryn’s vision turned out to be nothing. But they did send word to the Security Guild via their second son. A very old fairy arrived at Eryn’s house moments after she had washed and dressed and gulped down a mouthful of breakfast. She could hear the buzz of activity from the Navreets’ next door. No doubt plans for another search were already underway. The Wise fairy was wearing a shapeless robe. Thinning hair and a wrinkled face made it impossible to tell whether the fairy was a man or a woman. He or she looked closely at Eryn’s face out of tiny blue eyes that peeped out from deep crevices in the ancient face. A flicker of recognition passed across those eyes and the Wise One said, in a crackly voice, “You have the gift.” They went into the den where it was quiet. Eryn was instructed to sit cross-legged on the floor opposite the Wise fairy and tell all she could remember about her vision. She could see little Felix, wearing a red T-shirt and long beige pants. He was in distress. He was in a forest-like place and he was trapped in vegetation. He seemed to be all tangled up in vines. His face was hot and sweaty and there were tears running down his soft cheeks. Whenever he strained against the ropy green tendrils, they tightened on him. He had been frightened through the night, hearing strange noises and seeing unfamiliar shapes in the dark. The Wise fairy asked Eryn to describe the vegetation in detail. While Eryn closed her eyes and brought it to mind, she was aware that she had never seen any of the plant material in Fairyland. She started worrying that Felix had somehow succeeded in forcing his magic to come in and had accidentally transported himself to another land.
The Elder from the Security guild came to the door next and sat down with Eryn and her parents at the kitchen table. He did take tea and watched Eryn cautiously throughout their conversation. Eryn told him what she saw in her vision and explained that the Wise Ones might be able to figure out Felix’s location. Eryn felt rather than saw her three brothers watching her from the kitchen doorway and she felt terribly important, as well as a bit freakish. “So, you’re a Finder Fairy?” the Security Elder said to her before he left. Eryn blushed and stuttered, “I don’t know. I guess I might be.” He smiled briefly and then was gone. Her mother and dad were thrilled. Her dad said that with the proper training she would have one of the most prestigious careers in Fairyland. Eryn herself could not remember hearing of anyone who had a gift like hers. “There haven’t been any Finder Fairies for generations now,” her mother explained. “They were becoming the stuff of legends. But there really were Finder Fairies at one time. People still remember talk of great-great-grandparents who had the gift. They were always famous. Everyone wants a Finder Fairy living in her community. Someone to find the lost things, the lost children, …” Eryn’s mother felt hot tears springing to her eyes, and the sight of her beautiful daughter’s bewildered face blurred before her. Eryn’s dad gave her mother a quick squeeze and a pat on the shoulder. “But the best part is the work you can do on Earth,” her dad enthused. “It’s a job that can actually change people’s lives! That’s why you need to study hard and receive the proper training. You must be wise and judicious in deciding whether to help recover lost people and things or not.” When Eryn started to protest, her dad shushed her up by saying, “Not now, dear. Lots of time for that later. Now you must rest and think of Felix. We’ll wait till the Wise Ones report back.” So Erin went to her room and stared at her ceiling. A Finder Fairy! A finder of lost things, she marvelled. She couldn’t believe that this calling was her destiny. A tingle of excitement traveled up her spine and made her wings twitch. She giggled to herself with pleasure and then fell into a dreamless sleep. A few hours later, her dad was jostling her awake. “Come on, Eryn, the Wise Ones are back.” His whisper was urgent. She splashed some water on her face and followed her parents hurriedly over to the Navreets’. The Security Elder who had been to her house was there, along with a few other top-ranking security fairies. Three Wise Ones were in attendance, sitting cross-legged on the floor of the Navreets’ living room. Eryn’s parents settled themselves into chairs as Mrs. Navreet rushed over to Eryn. She hugged her tightly, happy sobs wracking her body. Eryn returned the embrace gently. “You are a miracle, Eryn! A miracle! You have seen our boy!” Mrs. Navreet pealed in a trembling voice. She seemed to be clinging to Eryn for dear life. “It’s all right, Mrs. Navreet,” she said softly, patting her back. “I told you we’d get him back, and we will.” Mr. Navreet tugged on Mrs. Navreet’s sleeve and ushered her away from Eryn. “Let the girl come in and sit down,” she could hear him saying. When they were all assembled, the Wise One who had come to see Eryn spoke. They had searched all the historical sources and found reference to the type of vegetation Eryn had seen in her vision. They knew pretty clearly where Felix was. There was only one problem: it was in Pixie territory. Will Eryn be able to find Felix? Find out in the next issue of Fairy Tales
